The SI LA Community of 54 Ethnic groups in Vietnam

    The SI LA are also called Cu De Xu and Kha Pe. They inhabit in Seo Hai and Si Thau Chai Hamlets (Can Ho Commune) of Muong Te District in Lai Chau1 Province and Nam Xin Hamlet (Muong Toong Commune) of Muong Nhe District of Dien Bien2 Province. They have a population of about 1,006 persons. The SI LA language belongs to the Tibeto-Bumnese3 group.

    The SI LA live on growing dry-rice and com. Recently, they have grown rice in submerged fields. Though agriculture plays a major role, hunting and gathering are also of significance in their life.

    The SI LA live in houses built on the ground. A fire place is located at the center of the house. SI LA women’s attire is quite unique. The upper front part of their dress is in a different color from the rest and fully decorated with silver and aluminum coins. Their headgears vary according to age. Young girls always carry a handbag edged with red threads. In the past, SI LA men painted their teeth red and women black. Now this custom is no longer observed by young people.

     The SI LA have many family lineages. Relationship between the members of a lineage is very doseo. The head of a lineage Is the oldest man who plays an important role among the members and judges in charge of internal afeirs, especially the worship. In SI LA society, besides the heads of the lineage, the mo (sorcerers) are respected by all.

    According to customs the wedding is celebrated in two stages at interval of one year. At the second rite, the family of the groom must hard wedding presents to the bride’s family prior bringing the bride home.

     It is also cjstomary that the graveyard occupies a plot at the lower end of the residence area, in which the graves of the members of the same lineages are grouped. The SI LA often build funeral houses before digging the graves.

     The coffir is made from hollowed tree-trunk. They never visit the graves or re-inter the dead remains but children must be in mourning for their parents in three years.

    The SI LA celebrate many religious rituals, the most important Is the worship of ancestors and the village’s tutelary genie. There are also agriculture-related rites.

    The life of the SI LA has been considerably Improved but remains low. They are feeing many difficult and need the supports from the authorities.
