The DAO Community of 54 Ethnic groups in Vietnam

    In Vietnam, the DAO community has a population of 685,432 Inhabitants. They settle in the midland and mountainous provinces along the Vietnam-China1, Vietnam borderlines and in North Vietnam, mainly concetrating in Ha Giang2, Tuyen Quang3, Lao Cai 4, Yen Bai 5, Quang Ninh6, Cao Bang7, Bac Kan8, Lai Chau9, Lang Son10, Thai Nguyen11, Son La12, Hoa Binh13, Phu Tho14. Recently, they have migrated to the Central Highlands and the eastern part of South Vietnam. The DAO community consists of many local subgroups such as Dao Quan trang (White-dad Dao), Dao Quan chet (Tight-trousers Dao), Dao Tien (Coin Dao), Dao Thanh Y (Indigo-dad Dao), Dao Do (Red Dao). In the past they were also called Man, Dong, Trai, Dai Ban, Tieu Ban, etc. The DAO language belongs to the Hmong-Dao group. The DAO worship their ancestor called Ban Ho15.

    The DAO live In three kinds of houses: houses-on-stilts houses built on the ground and houses half on stilts and half on the ground. They mainly live on growing rice on milpas and In submerged fields. They also grow subsidiary crops. At present many DAO families in the Central Highlands and the eastern part of South Vietnam engage in planting coffee, pepper and other industrial crops. They use rudimentary farm tools but apply many advanced farming techniques. Some of their sidelines are developed including cloth weaving carpentry, blacksmithing paper-making and vegetable oil-pressing.

    In the past the DAO rear plenty of pigs ard poultry, mainly for rituals, funerals, and weddings. Nowadays, in many localities, they develop husbandry to the level of commodity production.

    In the former days, DAO men wore their hair in a chignon at behind the neck or atop the head. Nowadays, all have their hair cut short DAO male attire comprises trousers, short vest and jackets. Female attire is more abundant with many traditional decorative motifs. DAO women arrange their hair long. In the wedding, the bride often wears a hat in the past marriage included many complex rituals. There are two matrilocal forms temporary and permanent. However, normally, the bride comes to live with her husband’s family. Funerals also reflect many ancient customs. In some regions the dead persons from 12 years-old upward are cremated.

    The DAO believe in the existence of souls and demons, so they maintain a number of complicated and expensive rituals.

    Relationships among members of the same lineage are very close. The DAO can identify the rank and position of people of the same lineage by their middle names.

   The DAO possess a long-standing culture and history. Their folk knowledge are rich, especially traditional medicine. The DAO have long used Chinese scripts (but pronounced in the Dao way) called Nom Dao.
