The CHUT have a population of about 3,700 inhabitants, including subgroups of Sach, May, Rue, Arem and Ma Lieng. The majority inhabit in Minh Hoa, Bo Trach and Tuyen Hoa Districts of Quang Binh1 Province. A small part settles in Huong Khe District (Ha Tinh)2. The CHUT language belongs to the Viet-Muong3 group.

They are mainly involved in cultivating flooded fields, the Rue and the Arem practise burnt-over farming. The CHUT also adopt hunting, gathering, fishirg and animal husbandry. Carpentry and basketry are popular. They have to buy or barter for metal tools, cloth, and garments. They do not know how to grow cotton and weave cloth.

Though living a sedentary life, their villages are scattered. In the past, their houses are makeshift. In a village, the leader of the most prestigeous lineage will be proclaimed the village chief.

Previously, the CHUT took steamed rice served with sliced wild vegetable, snail or fish. Manioc and monkey meat were once their essential dishes of the Rue subgroup. Nowadays, thanks to the Scate’s assistance, their Ife has been considerably improved.

Matnmony is kept in a stable status, variance is rare. The CHUT organize funerals in a simple way, with influences from tne Kinh. Following their custom, when a person dies, his or her body is kept in the house for one day before being burled. The grave is built up into tumulus covered with no funeral house. Three days later, the head of the lineage conjures up the dead personas soul to bring it to the ancestral altar. The CHUT believe In the existence of the spirits of the forest, the stream and the sky. For them, the god of agriculture reigns supreme.

The CHUT inherited a rich folk art and culture. The folksongs called ka-tum and Ka-lenh are very fond of by many people. The ancient tales are diverse with various themes. The CHUT play pan-pipes, six-hole flutes, male and female harplike musical instruments.
