The PA THEN Community of 54 Ethnic groups in Vietnam

   The PA THEN have a population of about 6,529 inhabitants concentrating in the communes of Tan Trinh, Yen Binh, Huu San, Tan Lap (Bac Quang District), Tan My (Quang Binh District) of Ha Giang Province¹, and Hong Quang, Linh Phu (Chiem Hoa District), and Doi Can, Kien Thiet and Chiem Yen (Yen Son District) of Tuyen Quang Province². Their other name is Pa Hung. The Pa Then language belongs to the Hmong-Dao group³.

   In the past, the PA THEN lived mainly on slash-and-bum cultivation. Rice and com are their staple food. The Pa Then hamlets are often founded near streams, in valleys and on low mountain slopes. Each hamlet has about So­ho houses which are built on the ground, with a solid wooden structure.

   Pa Then costumes are featured by bright red color. Men wear a blouse, long indigo trousers and a long scarf. Women put on a long skirt, a shirt, a bra and an abundantly-decorated turban. Pa then women like to wear silver Jewelry.

   The PA THEN have many family lineages. People of the same lineage have common ancestors and are forbidden from getting marriage each other. According to custom, after marriage, the husband comes to live with his wife’s family for a certain time. If the wife’s family has no son, the husband will live there forever and has to worship the spirits of his wife’s family. Half of their children take the father’s family name and the rest the mother’s.

   The Pa Then worship their ancestors at home. Some religious activities are related to agriculture like the cult of the genie of soil, new rice ritual, praying for rain, or worshipping the rifle’s soul.

   The PA THEN preserve a rich heritage of folk culture with legends, folk songs, lullabies, dances and musical instruments (pan-pipes, tay nhay zither and bamboo flutes).
