The O DU Community of 54 Ethnic groups in Vietnam

   At present, the O DU number over 370 persons. In the past, they mostly inhabited in the hamlets of Kim Hoa and Xop Pot (Kim Da Commune), and scattered in the neighboring communes of Tuong Duong District, Nghe An Province. They have resettled in some hamlets around the reservoir of the Ban Ve Hydroelectricity Plant. The O DU are also called Tay Hat. Their language belongs to the Mon-Khmer group.

   Formerly, the O DU lived on slash-and-bum cultivation with rice as their staple food, while maize, cassava and milet as auxiliary food. Gathering and hunting still play an important role in their economic life. Cows are raised in small quantity to provide traction, and poultry and pigs to serve rituals or worshipping activities and to feast guests. Their living standards are now considerably improved. Bamboo-plaiting and cloth weaving are family sidelines.

  The O DU live in small-size families. After marriage, the bridegroom comes to live at his wife’s house for some time before returning to his house with children and wife. According to the O Du calendar, a new year is marked by the first peal of thunder in early spring. They believe that people have souls which, after death, become ghosts. All ancestors will become the house spirits after their death.

   Today, the O DU still retain self-consciousness about their ethnicity, but their language has almost vanished (only a few people know their mother tongue). They fluently use the Thai and Kho Mu languages. Their cultural identity Is obscured by the influences of the Thai and the Kho Mu.
