The CO HO Community of 54 Ethnic groups in Vietnam

The CO HO’s population is of nearly 145,857 inhabitants who settle mainly in Lam Dong Province1. The CO HO community has other names such as Xre, Nop, Co-don, Chil, Lat and Tring. The Xre group has the largest population and inhabits in the Di Linh Plateau2. The CO HO language belongs to the Mon-Khmer3 group.
The CO HO cultivate nee on milpas and flooded fields. The Xre subgroup mainly have adopted wet-rice cultivation and a sedentary lifestyle for a long time. Other subgroups practise slash-and-bum cultivation. They use such tools such axes, knives, hoes and sticks to dig holes. The CO HO are good at horticulture, growing jackfruit, avocado, banana, and papaya. Nowadays, they lead a sedentary life and specialize in growing coffee and mulberry.
Each CO HO village consists of families of the same kinship. CO HO women play an active role in marriage. Monogamy is executed in the CO HO society. After the wedding, the groom comes to live with his wife’s family.
The CO HO believe in the existence of many genies. The supreme is Ndu, then come genies of the Sun, Moon, mountain, river, earth and rice. Many rites are organized relating to rice cultivation, such as buffalo-slaughtering (nho sa ro-pu), seed sowing and buffalo-feet washing. The buffalo-slaughtering ceremony is a grand post-harvest ritual organized before the new crop. In these rites, the CO HO play many traditional musical instruments. By the fire and alcohol jars, the village patriarchs tell their descendants legends, myths, poems and folk songs of their origin and native land.
The CO HO possess an abundant source of folklore and arts. Lyrical poems, called Tampla, sound very romantic. The CO HO have many traditional dances to perform at festivals and ceremonies. Their musical instruments include gongs, deer-skin drums, flutes, pan-pipes, lip organs, six-stringed zithers, bamboo oboes, and so on.
