Hits: 487

The CHU RU are also called Cho Ru and Ru. They have a population of more than 16,900 inhabitants, chiefly living in Don Duong District (Lam Dong)1, and the rest in Binh Thuan2 Province. The CHU RU language belongs to the Austronesian3 family.

The CHU RU adopted a sedentary life and did farming very early. They also develop sericulture and life is fairly stable. Apart from cultivation, they raise cattle, pigs, goats and poultry. Their handicrafts include weaving bamboo and rattan articles, producing tools such as sickles, picks and knives. Some villages are well known for pottery. Hunting, gathering and picking help to provide a significant food supply.

The village (play) contains many family lineages. Po-play4 (village chiefs) are elected by the villagers. Next to them is the sorcerer.

In the past, a CHU RU family comprises 3-4 generations living in an elongated house. Monogamy is observed. The young woman takes her husband on her initiative. The husband lives in his wife’s family. The CHU RU worship their ancestors, with the rituals being carried out in the cemetery. There is no altar in the house.

Agricultural ceremonies are rich, in celebration of the genies of water-dams, canals and rice. The most noteworthy is the ritual dedicated to Bo-mung5 (god of water dam) in the second lunar month.

The CHU RU possess a rich treasury of oral literature of popular songs, folksongs and proverbs praising the matriarchy and women’s role in traditional society. There are many epics and stories in verses of high artistic and historic value. Their traditional musical instruments include gongs, drums, flutes, etc.
