The GIAY villages are very crowded, some may contain hundreds of households. The GIAY people often live in houses-on-stilts (in Ha Giang6 and Cao Bang7) and houses built on the ground (in Lao Cai 1 and Lai Chau3). The central compartment of the house serves for receiving guests and for placing the ancestral altar. Each couple live in a seperated small room.

Patriarchal custom is the rule of GIAY families. Children take the family name of their father. The family of a young man seeks marriage for their son. After the wedding the bride comes to live with her husband’s family. However, matrilocal residence is also popular. In the past marriage by “kidnapping” was occured with the bridees and her family’s agreement when a young man could not afford berothal and wedding ceremonies.

GIAY women in pregnancy must obey taboos and pray for safe delivery. When the baby is one month old a ceremony is held to inform the ancestors of the birth and pray for their protection. At the ceremony the soccerer writes on a piece of red cloth the baby’s horoscope. The horoscope is consulted for the owner’s marriage and funeral later.

According to GIAYS’ cosmogonic concepts, the universe is composed of the world of the living the celestial world and the underworld. When a person dies, it is customary that if funeral and burial are carefully organized, the deceased will be carried to the heaven. On the contrary, it will be doomed to the underworld.

On the altar, the GIAY worship not only their ancestors but also the genies  of kitchen, the sky and the earth. They also worship the Goddess of Childbirth and the house spirit. Some families even worship the wife’s ancestors. The ancient ancestors are worshipped as the guardian genies.

The cultural heritage of the GIAY is rich including many ancient tales, poems, proverius, puzzles and folk songs. Many stories explain natural phenomena. Some stories are narrated in accompaniance with songs (sung stories). Folksongs are popular with various genres and tunes partcularly love duets.
