The KHMER have about 1,112,286 inhabitants concentrating in the provinces of Soc Trang1, Bac Lieu2, Vinh Long3, Tra Vinh4, Can Tho5, Kien Giang6 and An Giang7. They are also called the Khmer-origin Vietnamese and Khmer Krom.

The KHMER have lived in the Mekong Delta for a long time. They possess their own spoken and wdting languages. Their language belongs to the Mon-Khmer group8. The KHMER live alternately with the Kinh and Hoa in srok (village) or phum (hamlet).

Their houses are simple, built on the ground and thatched with coconut leaves or tiles. The rear roof Is often longer than the front one. The KHMER often build houses with measurements in odd numbers. The entrance door opens to the east.

The KHMER have adopted an intensive cultivation of wet rice for a long time. They are experts in selecting rice varieties, irrigation techniques, and desalting ricefields. Watermelons are grown in many localities where the KHMER settle. The KHMER also engage in raising cattle for traction, pigs, chickens, ducks and fish as well as other handicrafts (weaving, ceramics, and sugar making).

Apart from their folk beliefs, the KHMER in South Vietnam follow Brahmanism and Hinayana Buddhism. They are venerated Buddhism. Each hamlet has a pagoda which is the center of socio-cultural activities. Most of the KHMER youths come to study and improve their virtue and knowledge at pagodas. There are now more than 400 KHMER pagodas built in South Vietnam. Not only teaching KHMER scripts and Buddhist doctrines, the KHMER pagodas also transfer experience in production to Buddhist followers.

The KHMER community in South Vietnam preserve many customs and practices. Their culture and arts are very unique. The large pagodas have orchestras and junk racing teams. Every year the KHMER organize the water splashing holiday and many traditional festivals, including Chon Chnam Thmay (Lunar New Year), Buddha‘s birthday, Dolta (pardoning the dead), Ook Om Bok (moon worship), and so on.
