The NUNG have about 914,350 inhabitants concentrating in the provinces of Lang Son1, Cao Bang2, Bac Can3, Thai Nguyen4, Bac Giang5 and Tuyen Quang6. They have local subgroups such as Xuong, Giang, Nung An, Nung Loi, Phan Sinh, Nung Chao, Nung Inh, Qui Bin, Nung Din and Khen Lai.
The NUNG language is close to that of the Tay and belongs to the Tay-Thai7 group. The NUNG has writings called Nom Nung (Nung demotic scripts) which prevailed since the 17th century.
The NUNG mainly worship their ancestors. The ancestrail altar is placed in a compartment of the house and above it hungs the altar dedicated to deities, genies, saints, Confucian and Kwan Yin.
The NUNG live on rice and com. They grow rice either in submergec fields within the valleys and on milpas. They plant industrial crops and perennial fruit trees such as tangerines and persimmons. Anise is the most valuable tree of the NUNG which has brought them high profit every year. Handicrafts are quite developed, particularly weaving cloth, carpentry, blacksmithing, basketry and ceramics.
The NUNG settle in villages. In front of a village are the submerged fields and behind are milpas and orchards. The NUNG houses-on-stilts are built by wood and roofed with tiles or thatch.
Previously, the NUNG wear indigo attire. The NUNG prefer fried dishes with pig fat. A unique and luxurious dish of the NUNG is khau nhuc (stewed pork). Cross-drink became a long-standing custom of the NUNG.
The Nung preserve an abundant treasury of folk arts and culture including folksongs and alternative songs (sli). Smooth melodies of sli in harmony with natural sounds of the forests and mountains are deeply impressive to those who once come to NUNG regions. Then is a famous folk performance combined by many elements: songs, music, and performance style. Lung tung (going to the fields) ceremony held in the first lunar month is very well-known and attractive to people of all ages.
