Hits: 455

With a population of about 12,095 persons, the LA CHI chiefly live in Xin Man District (Ha Giang Province) and Muong Khuong and Bac Ha Districts (Lao Cai Province1). Their other names are Cu Te and La Qua. Their language belongs to the Kadai group2.

The LA CHI grow wet rice in terraced fields. They raise buffaloes, horses, goats, poultry and fish but not oxen. La Chi women have a long-standing tradition In weaving cotton cloth and Indigo dyeing.

The LA CHI live in villages, in which each family owns a house-on-stilts as the living quarter and an adjoining house on the ground as the kitchen. The house-on-stilts has three compartments and the only stairway near the kitchen. The ancestral altar is placed in the main compartment of the house-on-stilts.

The LA CHI attire Is simple. Men wear five-paneled dress felling down below the knees (shorter nowadays), wide trousers and head turbans. Women usually wear a four-paneled long dress with a waist belt a bra, a long turban, a pair of trousers or a skirt. Jewelry includes bracelets for men and bracelets and earrings for women. La Chi women used to carry a papoose ever their forehead, no matter it is made of cloth or bamboo plaits, while men carry shoulder dossers.

Each family lineage has its own drums and gongs used in ritual ceremonies. The head of the lineage must be an expert in ceremonial rites. Children take the family name of their father. As wedding presents, the groom’s family has to offer an amount of money as the cost of the girl’s upbringing.

Every year, the LA CHI hold periodical ceremonies in accordance with the lunar calendar, asking for rice seeds for the entire village, opening the store to invoke the soul of the rice seeds, celebrating the completion of the tilling season, welcoming new harvest, bringing the rice soul home, and the 7th lunar month festival which is the biggest and merriest

There are many old tales about the founder of this ethnic group-old HOANG DIN THUNG about PU LO TO who created different genera and species and taught people habits and customs, and about natural phenomena. Young boys and girls like to sing ni ca songs. Musical Instruments Include drums, gongs, 3-stringed zither, and tree leaves as lip organs. Popular games at festivals are con throwing, top spinning swinging and merry-go-round.
