The LA HA Community of 54 Ethnic groups in Vietnam

   The LA HA have a population of about 6,388 persons, concentrating in Son La¹ and Lao Cai² Provinces. They are also called Xa Puong, Xa Khao, Pua, and Khla-phlao. The LA HA language belongs to the Kadai ³ group.

The LA HA chiefly live on growing rice on milpas and in flooded fields. Formerly, picking and gathering were more important and frequent than hunting and fishing. Nowadays, raising pigs, poultry and cattle begins to develop.

   The LA HA grow cotton which is bartered for cloth made by the Thai ⁴. Currently they dress in the same fashion as the Black Thai ⁴.

   There are about a dozen or more houses in a village. Houses are built on stilts, with two entrance doors and stairways at both ends. A door is reserved for guests and the other for family life.

   Young boys and girls are free to seek lovers. Marriage must have their parents’ consent. To express love, a young boy visits the young girl’s house and plays the flute and the two-stringed violin and sings before entering Into conversation. In the past, after the marriage proposal, if the girl’s family did not return the presents brought by the match-maker of the boy’s family, a ceremony was held for the groom’s matrilocal residence. The bridegroom had to live in his wife’s family for 4-8 years before the wedding was carried out. The bride then joined her husband’s family and took his family name.

   Old customs rule that a dead person is burled along with money and paddy rice. The LA HA believe in different spirits and that each person has eight souls. After a normal death, the souls become the spirits of the house or the milpas. Each family has its own altar dedicated to the house spirit. But the house-owner worships his father only. Every year, when ban flowers blossom, thanksgiving is celebrated in every family in honor of parents.
