The PHU LA Community of 54 Ethnic groups in Vietnam

   The PHU LA, including the Xa Pho subgroup, have nearly 8,947 inhabitants living in the provinces of Lai Chau¹, Son La², Lao Cai³ and Ha Giang⁴. The largest part settles in Lao Cai. The PHU LA are also called Bo Kho Pa, Mu Di Pa and Va Xo Lao. The Phu La language belongs to the Tibeto-Burmese group⁵. The PHU LA worship their ancestors and believe in animism.

   The PHU LA live in separate villages, alternating with the Hmong, Dao and Tay. Each village contains about 10-15 households. The simple thatched house consists of three compartments and two lean-tos.

   In the former days, the PHU LA economic life mainly depended on farming in milpas and terraced fields. They rear buffaloes for traction, horses as means of transport, pigs and poultry for meat. Basketry is well-known with beautifully-decorated bamboo and rattan articles. These articles are often sold or bartered for goods from other ethnic groups.

   Phu La men wear shirt open at the front with many crosses of beads on the main body and stripes. Women dress is embroidered with many colorful motifs. In addition, they often cover a square-naked apron embroidered with motifs and attached with beads shaped in parallel lines or eight-winged stars.

   The old men, village chiefs and lineage heads play a significant role in managing public affairs. Young people are free in marriage. When they fall in love, the couple informs their parents to prepare a feast to treat the relatives. After this feast the couple is given family approval for engagement. The wedding may be held one or two years later. According to customs, after marriage, the bride comes to live with her husband’s family.
