The CO have a population of more than 29,771 inhabitants settling mainly in Tra My District of Quang Nam1 Province and Tra Bong District of Quang Ngai2 Province. The CO have other names such as Cor, Col, Cua and Tran. The CO language belongs to the Mon-Khmer3 group. The concepts of animism prevail among the CO and they believe in the souls, mostly the God of Rice.
The CO live mainly on slash-and-bum agriculture. They grow hce, maize, cassava and other crops. In particular, they plant high-quality cinnamon which becomes a specialty of Tra My and Tra Bong Districts, bringing about a great income to the CO every year. Each CO village is named after its chief or a river, stream, or forest in the former days, the CO lived in a long house-on-stilts in which each nuclear family has a separate compartment callee a kitchen. Recently the CO have built smaller houses on the ground. The CO do not know how to weave, so they have to buy cloth and garments from the Kinh and the Xo-dang. According to tradition, men leave their upper torsos naked and cover their lower body with loincloths. Women wear lungis, bras and short- sleeved shirts. In winter, they cover with large blankets.
They like to wear necklaces, bracelets and earrings made of copper or silver. Women often tie colourful bead strings around their waists, necks and heads.
The CO old people are respected by all. The village chief must be knowledgeable, experienced in production, well-behaved and belongs to the lineage who contributed to the building of the village. The CO had no private name for each lineage, thus they all take the family name of the Dinh. During the anti-American resistance war, most of the CO adopted the name of Ho of President Ho Chi Minh4 as their family name.
The young CO people are free in seeking for their partners. The wedding is very simple and unexpensive. After the wedding, the bride comes to live in the groom’s house Formerly, the CO did not marry people of other ethnic groups. Now, they have sons and daughters-in-law from the Kinh, Xo-dang and Hre.
The CO like to sing, dance and beat drums and gongs. Their popular folksongs are Xru, KIu and Agiol. The attractive legends are orally transferred from generation to generation.
