The LO LO Community of 54 Ethnic groups in Vietnam

   The LO LO are also called Mun Di or Di. There are two subgroups: Lo Lo Hoa (Flower Lo Lo) and Lo Lo Den (Back Lo Lo). Their population numbers more than 3,327 persons. They live ciiefly in Dong Van and Meo Vac Districts (Ha Glang Province¹), Bao Lam and Bao Lac (Cao Bang²), and Huong Khuong (Lao Cai³). Their language belongs to the Tibeto-Burmese group⁴.

   The LO LO mainly worship their ancestors. Their source of living comes from growing maize or rice in milpas.

   They usually establish their villages on mountain slopes but close to sources of water. They are grouped in villages of 20-25 houses each. Their houses are built on stilts, on the ground or half on stilts and half on the ground.

   Flower Lo Lo women wear a round-necked vest and a pair of short-legged trousers covered with a short skirt. Black Lo Lo women wear short-legged trousers and a square-necked vest pulled over the head.

   Their written language is pictographic scripts which Is no longer In use. Their traditional calendar divides a year in 11 months, each corresponding to an animal.

   They have many family lineages. People of the same lineage co-habit in a hamlet. The chief of the lineage is thau chu who is responsible for ritual ceremonies and the preservation of the usages of the lineage.

   The Lo Lo practise monogamy and the wife lives In her husband’s house. Each lineage possesses a set of bronze drums, burled in the earth for maintenance and unearthed only for funerals to keep the tempo for dances. The lineage chief is the keeper of the bronze drums.

   The Lo Lo folkloric culture is abundant and original, particularly expressed in dances, songs and legends. Colorful designs are arranged In a special style on attire.

   Despite their hard life, much importance is attached to education. Many LO LO persons are university graduates or have finished secondary education; they have actively engaged in economic and cultural activities.
