They live in houses on stilts or on the ground. Their houses built on the ground have thatched roofs reaching down almost to the ground and vaulted doorways.

Each village usually has dozens of households. The village chief plays a major role in the community life. Everybody observe experience and customs handed down by earlier generations. Men and women, young and old alike, like to drink alcohol and to smoke tobacco. Men generally wear loincloths and leave their upper body naked. Women wear lungis which fall to their ankles. Young men and women prefer pullover-like shirts. Loincloths, lungis and vests are dyed in dark indigo and decoratec with red-and-white patterns. Matriarchy is observed and Children take the family name of their mother. In the family, the wife holds the key position but always pay respect to her husband. Aging parents usually live with their youngest daughter.

According to old habits, MNONG grown-ups had to file the r teeth before talking of love and marriage. This useage fades now. Marriage goes through three steps – prooosal, engagement and wedding. After marriage, the groom stays in his wife’s family. However, the young couple can also live with the husband’s or the wife’s family according to the consent of both families.

The MNONG like to have many children, especially daughters. One year after birth the baby is given che true name. At funerals, people sing and beat gongs and drums by the coffin day and night. After placing the coffin in the grave, they cover it with plants, tree boughs and leaves before filling up with soil. After seven days or a month, the family holds a rite co go out of mourning.

The MNONG believe in the existence of many genies among them, the God of Rice holds a special role. Along with farming, they organize annual rituals to protect the God of Rice and pray for a bumper harvest.
